Every brand manager in Indian pharma faces the same quarterly question: the conference sponsorship requests are piling up — which ones deserve budget, and how do you defend the spend to compliance and finance?
What UCPMP 2024 actually allows
The Uniform Code of Pharmaceutical Marketing Practices, made mandatory in 2024, did not end conference sponsorship — it professionalised it. The rules that matter:
- Sponsorship money goes to the organising association or conference account, never to an individual doctor’s personal benefit.
- Engagements need paper: agreements, invoices, deliverables, and evidence the event happened as described.
- Educational content sponsorship (symposia, sessions, stalls at CME-accredited events) sits comfortably inside the code; personal travel, hospitality and gifts to individual HCPs do not.
The practical consequence: conferences that offer documented, compliant packages get budget more easily — and organisers who can’t produce clean paperwork are becoming un-sponsorable.
The sponsorship menu and what it costs
| Package | Typical range (2026) | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Exhibition stall, state conference | ₹50,000 – ₹3 lakh | Booth + delegate footfall for 1–2 days |
| Exhibition stall, national conference | ₹2 – 10 lakh | Larger footfall, premium locations tiered |
| Lunch / dinner symposium | ₹5 – 25 lakh | 45–60 min of your science to a full hall |
| Session or hall sponsorship | ₹3 – 15 lakh | Branding on a scientific session or hall |
| Delegate kit / lanyard / app | ₹2 – 12 lakh | Brand on every delegate all conference |
| Principal sponsor, national congress | ₹25 lakh – ₹1 crore+ | Category exclusivity + all of the above |
How to choose the right conference — not the loudest one
The mega-congresses are visible; the value is often elsewhere. A 400-delegate state cardiology conference can out-perform a 10,000-delegate general congress for a cardiac brand, at a tenth of the price, because everyone in the hall is your prescriber. The screening questions:
- Delegate profile — what share of attendees are the specialists your brand targets?
- CME accreditation — accredited events pull genuine attendance, not badge-collectors.
- Reporting — will the organiser give you footfall, symposium attendance and delegate demographics afterwards?
- Compliance paper — can they produce agreements and invoices your audit team will pass?
